Information |
As a painter and graphic artist, Heckel was one of the most important reprensentatives of German Expressionism. Together with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff he founded the artist group, „Brücke“.
Heckel sought to convey the spontaneous experience of life. His paintings are determined by intense, loud colours so juxtaposed that they appear to emanate beyond their surface. Space and objects are deformed in an expressive manner. He painted landscapes and bathing scenes in a dazzling light, but also romantic port views and subjects from the world of the circus. In his wood cuts which stand on a par with his paintings, Heckel developed a hard, angular „archaic“ style. |
