Kirkeby, Per

Born

1938

Information   The art of Per Kirkeby hinges on the experience of nature, which he visualizes in an experimental way. In his paintings, he refuses to decipt any fixed motive, but intuitively applies thin layers of color on canvas and slowly lets ambiguous pictorial structures crystallize. He thus reveals the process of creation itself. Kirkeby regards himself primarily as a painter but he also creates important graphic work, poems, films, photos as well as bronze and brick sculptures. In the 1960s, Kirkeby participated in the fluxus movement, a group dedicated to dissolving the traditional categories of art.
