Pechstein, Max

Born

1881

Died

1955

Information   Max Pechstein’s painting was motivated by the romantic dream of a life close to nature. Simplicity and power of expression are central values of his work. Pechstein used „primitive“ means, such as strong colours and simple structures, to regain an original, emotional effect on the spectator. In his pictures of nudes, wild landscapes and man struggling with the forces of nature, he emphasized the vital energies of life. After a trip to the islands of Palau (South Pacific), Pechstein was inspired by the cultures in that region, in which he found an ideal unity of man and nature. Pechstein was an occasional member of the artist group, the Brücke.
