Schmidt-Rottluff, Karl

Born

1884

Died

1976

Information   The pictorial style of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff could be described as a dreamy expressionism. His dramatic landscape paintings are determined by the rhythm of large areas of glowing, complementary colours. With the simplicity of his forms, he sought to visualize the essence of his subjects. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff was a member of the artist group „Brücke“ in Dresden. Successful not only as a painter, but also as a graphic artist, wood engraver, goldsmith and sculptor in wood, he might be considered as the most versatile representative of German Expressionism.
